VOLVO OCEAN RACE 2017-18

Team Sun Hung Kai / Scallywag, Hong Kong, becomes the fifth team to confirm its presence in the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18.
The fifth team for the 2017-18 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race will be named Team Sun Hung Kai / Scallywag and will represent Hong Kong in the historic ocean race.
The campaign is backed by Seng Huang Lee and Sun Hung Kai & Co., the owner of the supermax Scallywag, and aims to promote competition sailing in Asia and leave an enduring nautical legacy in the region. Hong Kong will host the Volvo Ocean Race for the first time in the 2017-18 edition, which starts in October.

The team will be patronized by the experienced Australian sailor David Witt, who returns to the Volvo Ocean Race after a 20-year absence, after competing in 1997-98 aboard Innovation Kvaerner, the ship headed by the former CEO of the Volvo Ocean Race , Knut Frostad

Witt, a Sydney-Hobart veteran who has competed more than 20 times, is regarded as one of the world's best navigators in harsh weather conditions, and is delighted with the idea of putting his ability back into service Of his team in the South Ocean aboard a Volvo Ocean 65.

More than five months after the start of the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18, the starting grid is filling up without a hurry but without a break.

In 2017-18 the teams will cover a total of 46,000 nautical miles and will pass through a total of 12 host cities - including Hong Kong -, and will end in The Hague at the end of June.

Hong Kong's first stop in the Volvo Ocean Race will be held in early 2018 and boats are expected to arrive from Melbourne on January 20.

During the ladder a series of races will be held in and around Hong Kong, including the In-port and a regatta around the island.


On May 18, the Volvo Ocean Race will announce a series of initiatives designed to position the regatta beyond the next decade.
